1) Love Actually
You probably don’t need much incentive to revisit this Richard Curtis classic movie but it would be criminal to create a Christmas list without it. Its quintessential Britishness is what captured the nation’s heart and never let it go. It is full of iconic moments. From Colin Firth’s awkward attempt at Portuguese, to Hugh Grant’s rendition of ’Jump’ and of course Bill Nighy’s defacement of Blue. Also, I am sure I’m not the only one that has to mentally prepare themselves to watch Emma Thompson’s heartbreak to the sad melody of Joni Mitchell.

2) The Holiday
Following the cringy romance theme, Christmas isn’t Christmas without two hours of Jude Law. While you have to get through a few annoying Cameron Diaz moments, the film is completely heart-warming. Jack Black is adorable and hilarious throughout and Kate Winslet is the perfect character to root for. Despite some over the top moments included for dramatic effect, Winslet’s storyline is extremely relatable. Who hasn’t been in love with someone who does not feel the same way?

3) Klaus
Klaus depicts the origin of Santa. We see Jesper, the privileged son of the postmaster general, punished for his laziness and sent to the frozen town of Smeerensburg to create a postal service. Smeerensburg is a small town by the north pole where town life revolves around a feud between both sides of the town. When there he befriends the reclusive toy maker Klaus and together they try to bring the town together. Wholesome right? The film is perfect for all generations and even picked up a nomination for best animation at the Oscars. This wholesome and heart-warming movie is tied together by an incredible musical score that kept making me cry throughout!

4) Arthur Christmas
Arthur Christmas is another classic animated Christmas movie. The film focuses on Santa’s youngest son Arthur and his need to deliver a missed present. The film is witty and filled with hilarious voices throughout. With Bill Nighy as Grand Santa and Jim Broadbent as Santa what can go wrong? Also, I can’t deny that my 15 year old self gets excited for Justin Bieber’s version of Santa Claus is Coming to Town in the credits.

5) Nativity!
My final Christmas pick is Nativity! The film follows the primary school teacher Mr Maddens (Martin Freeman). When dumped at Christmas, he loses all love for the season. That is until he is forced to put on the Christmas play alongside teaching assistant and eternal child Mr Poppy. Things get more complicated when Mr Maddens accidently claims that his ex-girlfriend who works in the film industry is coming to film the show. It is a masterpiece of misinformation and misunderstanding tied together with catchy Christmas songs, making it a “a warm fuzzy hot-water bottle of a movie.”
i am constantly in awe that a film as good as nativity has come out of coventry
