Frozen 2 Review: Olaf returns

Six years ago, Disney came out with two princess films, neither of which was hugely successful. Then, Frozen came out. And now, Frozen 2 is here.

Rating: 3.5/5

Frozen: The Predecessor

A heartfelt story about sisters Anna and Elsa, we have Frozen to thank for the hit song Let it Go. Frozen received widespread praise from critics and earned over $1 billion at the worldwide box office. Now, after a long wait, Frozen 2 is finally in theatres.

But is it as good as its predecessor? The sequel doesn’t reach the heights the first film did. It is a darker version, sometimes taking the risk of straying from the typical Disney movie story structure for a more mature style. While it doesn’t entirely work, other aspects of the film, like the complex emotional themes and the songs, still create that Disney magic.

Premise

After the events of Frozen, Anna and Elsa are living happily in Arendelle. They’re having family game nights with Anna’s boyfriend Kristoff, his reindeer Sven and our favourite snowman, Olaf. But one day, Elsa begins to hear a voice calling to her from the north, and when magical spirits drive the residents of Arendelle out of their homes, Anna, Elsa, and their friends decide to follow the voice. They track it to a mystical enchanted forest surrounded by an impenetrable mist that parts for Elsa’s magic. In order to save Arendelle, the sisters will have to trust each other as they learn the truth about Elsa’s powers and the history of Arendelle.

Thoughts

Frozen 2 is a magical return to the world of Anna and Elsa, one that has matured with those who fell in love with the original. It might be a little too dark for very young viewers, but still a movie to watch and enjoy with family and friends. Many fans of the first film will find something to like in the sequel, as its visuals are great and the impressive soundtrack makes the movie come to life on the big screen.

Overall, Frozen 2 is an admirable sequel, even if it doesn’t quite match the original.
