We’re taking a look at the chaos that unfolded in the MCU’s trailer for Spider-man: No Way Home and what this may mean for the upcoming movie. Spoilers ahead!
Finally the wait is over. And the wait may be different for everyone. For some it’s the wait to see Tom Holland back on our screens. For others it is to see what happens after Spiderman’s loss of anonymity. Or maybe it is to see how Ned deals with third wheeling Peter and MJ. All I know is that I cannot wait for every single aspect of it.
What can we take away from this highly anticipated trailer?
My main takeaway is the MCU’s full focus of the multiverse, and since Loki, the possibilities of the multiverse are endless. This makes this next instalment, as well as the entirefourth phase of the MCU even more exciting, as literally anything can happen.
For one, dead villains can make a return. This is evidently going to happen in No Way Home, as we see Spider-Man 2’s Dr Octopus (Alfred Molina) make a dramatic appearance (sunglasses and all), as well as subtle hints of the return of both The Amazing Spider-Man 2’s Electro (Jamie Fox) and Spiderman’s Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe).

Hearing Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin laugh/pumpkin bomb, and seeing Alfred Molina’s Octavius in the new Spidey trailer got me like. MY CHILDHOOD pic.twitter.com/ohwcrMD1T6

We can also assume that director Jon Watts has given Electro an image change since his first appearance in the MCU. During the trailer we see Spider-man fighting against yellow lightening, which we can instantly link to Electro. However, while Electro’s lightening, as well as skin is blue in The Amazing Spider-Man, this yellow lightening matches the villain’s original comic style. Therefore, I am excited to see a much more authentic Electro.
The Collapse of Reality
After Dr Strange’s spell has been cast we see the New York landscape appear to change and even collapse on itself. This shows how reality and time is becoming more warped and unstable, which continues from Loki, where the sacred timeline is destroyed, and the multiverse is allowed to unfold. Therefore, we can suspect that time’s entire structure and thus the safety of the galaxy is under huge threat. This collapse and destruction of reality I believe will be the key theme that will run throughout the entire fourth phase of the MCU. This is even more apparent through the title of the film that will follow No Way Home – Doctor Strange: The Multiverse of Madness.

Unanswered Questions
With the complete eruption of the multiverse, the question every Marvel fan has is: will we see the return of Andrew Garfield and Toby Maguire? Even though there were no hints to the inclusion of these two spidermen, and Andrew Garfield has denied his involvement in the film, Marvel fans are convinced that there is still hope! Assumptions have been made that this was in the cards since Toby Maguire’s trilogy, as why else would they have cast three different spidermen? Sadly, we will have to wait for the release of the film to find out if all our dreams will come true!

One thing that has got me questioning the MCU is Doctor Strange’s sudden nonchalance when it comes to the manipulation of time. The very thing he has been tasked to protect. As the Sorcerer Supreme, he has always appeared to be one of the most wise and knowledgeable Avengers, yet here we see him help Peter manipulate the past. I am no all-powerful sorcerer but I can see that casting a spell that changes the past seems like a recipe for disaster. This makes the premise of the film slightly frustrating, as surely the chaos that follows was avoidable!

This disparity between the Strange we know and the Strange we see in the trailer have led many Marvel fans to begin spinning their own theoretic webs, leading them to come up with a compelling suggestion. It is not Dr Strange at all. So, who could it be?
Mephisto
Many have noticed that No Way Home has taken inspiration from the comic One Day More, where Mephisto wipes the memory of everyone who found out about Spider-man’s identity. As this is exactly what Doctor Strange does in No Way Home, this has led them to believe that Mephisto is behind Doctor Strange’s actions. What furthers this argument is the very clear sign that reads ‘the devil in disguise’ as Peter is walking through a large crowd. With the MCU’s very careful and intricate planning, it isn’t a bad call.

Agatha
I think most people are hoping that it is fan favourite Agatha. It only took one thing to spark off this frenzy of fan theories. Doctor Strange’s uncharacteristic wink. If anyone knows Doctor Strange they can confirm he isn’t the kind of person you’d expect to be winking. However, in WandaVision Agatha’s wink was a classic part of her character. This case may be slightly far fetched but I wouldn’t put it past the MCU.
However, it is possible that it really is Doctor Strange. Maybe he knows something we don’t know (which let’s be honest he always does) or his power and intelligence has expanded his ego to Tony Stark levels, and he genuinely believes he can pull this off.
One thing we can say for certain about the film is that in classic Peter Parker style, Peter will once again make things worse before he makes them better. Just as he gave Tony’s glasses to Mysterio in one painful and regrettable moment, his request to change the past looks to be the catalyst for the chaos that follows.
Other questions to keep you occupied until Christmas:
Why is the sanctum covered in snow?
Will Aunt Meg and Happy become official?
Will we see anymore villains return?
And most importantly, where did Wong go?
Overall, the recent trailer has sparked debate, excitement, theories, and a huge amount of anticipation about the upcoming Spiderman film and the building momentum of the MCU’s fourth phase. Also, for those hopeless romantics like myself, seeing MJ and Peter Parker finally together on screen and off screen is an extremely exciting prospect. Sadly, we must wait until Christmas to either have our questions answered or just leave us more confused than we started! Either way, I cannot wait!
