Gene Roddenberry brought to life the fantastic world of Star Trek in 1966. Now, Amazon Prime brings us a follow-up with Star Trek: Picard.
It’s been 18 years since Star Trek: Nemesis (2002), and many more since Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987). This year, Jeff Bezos’ Amazon Prime presents a follow-up series that centres around the legendary Jean-Luc Picard (Sir Patrick Stewart) in the next chapter of his life.
The new series begins at the end of the 24th century, where 14 years after his retirement from Starfleet, Jean-Luc Picard is living a quiet life on his vineyard, Chateau Picard. When Picard is sought out by a mysterious young woman, Dahj (Isa Briones), in need of his help, he soon realises she may have personal connections to his own past.
It’s only been six episodes (at the time of writing), yet a closer look into what Star Trek was in the past can be seen in the series, as opposed to Netflix’s adaptation Star Trek: Discovery. However, even if Picard has found its way back to the original timeline that all Trekkies have wanted for a long time, it’s far from perfect.
The series continues to follow the principles of integration and acceptance that the creator set at the start of everything, but it plays with the emotions and nostalgia of the biggest fans of the franchise, who continue waiting for more action to happen. So far, we have seen Picard, Data (Brent Spiner), and a character perfectly reminiscent of Deanna Troi. Now all that remains is for Worf to appear.
So, until the end of the series arrives,
