This week, the candidates were summoned to the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich for their briefing by Lord Sugar.
Week four has meant the candidates would be entering the choppy waters of the fishing business, sourcing a catch of the day and creating a fish dish to sell to the public. Being a fish in a big pond, the candidates also needed to sell to a major corporate client, and the team who nets the biggest overall profit would win the task in the boardroom.
Previously: Bar boss Sophie stepped up, but Navid floored in the factory, meaning their spice beer failed to fizz. On the other team, drinks man Nick led from the front and in the boardroom, meaning there was a triumph for Vodify.
After another brutal boardroom, 12 candidates remain to battle the profit of the sea.
4 am:
Woken by the call, the candidates quickly dressed and packed their overnight bags, ready to hop in a taxi to head to the Greenwich, the charter of Britain’s sea time past.
“I aspire to win. I cannot lose again.” Said Amy.
8 am:
British shoppers have spent 4 billion pounds on seafood alone in the last year. For this week’s task, half of each team would be fishing down in Cornwall to get the catch of the day and creating a fish dish they would serve to the public. Could a poor sales patter leave them in treacherous water?
The other part of the team would be selling fish to a major corporate client. Convincing them to buy into their fish produce.
With 12 candidates remaining, there was a reshuffle of the teams. Sadly, for Alex, he was moved over to last week’s losing team, Infinity.
9 am:
Before the fishing around could begin, the first task was to assign a project manager… or a Skipper.
For team Infinity, Commercial cleaning company owner Alex took the lead on this week’s task. Or, in his words… ‘forced’ to take the lead by fellow contestant Amy.
Dessert parlour owner, Harpreet, became PM for team Diverse. Partnering with Francesca as sub-team leader with her background in fishing with her family when she was younger.
3 am: (The next day)
With half of each team in Cornwall and the other half in London, it was time to fish for something.
Fishing in one of Cornwall’s busiest fishing ports, Newquay. The Cornwall half of each team was about to reach high seas, to reel in their catch of the day.
From fish to dolphins, the teams were rearing to collect their first catch, whereas the London team they had the task of selecting the fish to sell to the corporate clients before they placed an order with their teammates in Cornwall.
“Several times, Harpreet promised top quality and to meet the exact standards of the chef. If this team do not deliver to these standards, they won’t get the price they are expecting.” Said Tim Campbell.
Also trying to net a deal was team infinity, led by Alex.
“They came here to a five-star hotel to sell fish, and they forgot to offer the guy the catch of the day, which was the crab. What on earth are they thinking?” Said Karen Brady.
“I think that went well!” Said Alex.
9 am:
As the whole of Cornwall heard the screams and groans from Amy, Stephany and Sophie as they fished out their catch of the day, which was crab… and lots of it, considering it won’t be sold because of the London team’s mess up.
Over on the other team, Nick and Aaron struggle to catch, whereas Francesca pulls in the pollock, showing off her true fishing skills.
Back over in London. The next task was to decide on a recipe that the Cornish team would make and sell.
For team Infinity, it was the choice of crab burgers or crab Arancini. And Arancini seemed to be the better dish out of the two.
“I am confident in our dish, but I am just hoping the girls can sell over in Cornwall.” Akshay.
However, all got a bit crabby when Alex announced to the Cornish team there were no crab orders for the corporal clients.
11 am:
Still pushing for pollock is Francesca, Nick and Aaron. Whist over in London, Harpreet decided to expand her budget as she added more ingredients to her tacos, as she decided she wanted to stir away from a ‘bog-standard taco’.
For their Arancini dish, Alex, Akshay and Kathryn argued over Lettice and Rocket and forgot about adding any additional elements to their dish,
“They have decided to add rocket and garlic mayo. That is a garnish. That is not going to add value to their dish.” Said Brady.
4 pm:
Recipes are ready… Fish deals are done… Tomorrow it is time to reel in the profit.
4 am: (The following day)
With the fish delivery arrived in London, it was now time for the ultimate fish prep. It was down to the London team to make their fish produce worthy of the clients standards in London. And for Harpreet, she needed to make sure her fish was of the highest quality.
Over in Cornwall – Tasked with producing fish tacos, Francesca wanted to focus on scaling up the recipe, giving their fish tacos other elements, in hopes they could make more profit.
Charged with making Arancini, Sophie, Amy and Stephany try to size up their supply.
“I honestly think they had a breakdown in London and forgot what we are doing here.” Said Stephany.
9:30 am:
London bound, and Alex is hitting another brick wall in his PM role, as Brady learns he had forgotten to arrange a time with the client to pick up the fish.
“When you’re taking an order from a client, getting the time right is very important. By this rate, it will be Sunday lunch next week….” Said Brady.
For Harpreet, the delivery date is looming.
“The team started out really confident and listening to all the instructions. Time ticking now, and they are starting to panic.” Said Campbell.
Over in Cornwall. Francesca and the boys set up shop, whereas the other group are still stuck on their Arancini. The girls became restless as they knew this recipe had cost them crucial time at the farmers market.
Later in the day, the fish tacos were flying, but team Arancini felt the pinch as they dropped their price to sift sales.
With this week’s task proving the candidates are fish out of the water, Harpreet failed to offer premium fish, and Alex lacked sales as the fish was not up to the buyer’s standards.
5 pm:
Tonight, profits are digested. Tomorrow, for one team, the sweet taste of victory.
Boardroom: What team netted the most profit?
Infinity: “They spent 439 pounds and made a profit of 116 pounds.” Said Brady
Diverse: “They spent a lot more, they spent 549 pounds, and they made a profit of 312 pounds.” Said Campbell.
Keeping the fishy theme. As a winner treat team diverse was sent to London sea life centre for an up-close shark cage experience. On the other side of the table, team Infinity was off to the doomed café.
PM Alex and his London teammates, Kathryn and Akshay, were in the boardroom and the firing line.
“I could get rid of all three of them, to be honest with you.” Said Lord Sugar, “This is without a doubt the worst failure I’ve ever experienced.”
Akshay: “Four tasks, four losses.”
Kathryn: “I think you lost complete focus on the fact this was a profit task.”
Alex: “The target here was the catch of the day, and you forgot.”
With his mess up of forgetting the catch of the day, a crucial element of the task. Lord Sugar’s dispatch of this week was Alex.
“Here is my dispatch of the day, and Alex, your fired.” Said Lord Sugar.
Next Week: 11 candidates remain to design a brand-new video game.
